There are many different ways to move around on snow and ice. Besides snowshoes and crampons, there are also microspikes, which are particularly useful in difficult terrain (firn, crust, or ice) and in winter conditions.
They are lightweight, take up little space in a backpack, and are very easy to use. Simply slip them into the elastic opening, secure them at the top with the Velcro fastener, and you're done.
