| Cup binding at the front and back |
The basket bindings at the front and back are designed for regular hiking boots. The crampons don't fit as securely as in the other photos. They're a good backup option if you don't expect any ice or snow sections on your tour, or only short ones. You can use them with your comfortable hiking boots. |
| Conditionally crampon-compatible mountaineering boots (category C boots): | These feature a heel clip for attaching crampons. This allows for significantly more tension, resulting in a more secure fit. A good compromise between walking comfort and functionality. |
| Fully crampon-compatible mountaineering boots (category D boots): | Category D boots, in addition to the rear clip, have a attachment point at the front for attaching crampons. Category D boots are designed for ice climbing, where extremely strong and reliable crampon grip is essential. The soles of these boots are very stiff and only conditionally recommended for long hikes. |
There are many different ways to get around on snow and ice.
Besides microspikes and snowshoes, there are also crampons. Crampons are definitely useful, especially in rough terrain, particularly in high mountains.
The sharp spikes dig deep into the ice, making ascents and descents easy and preventing falls. Ice climbing crampons with special spikes are available, and some are also suitable for via ferrata routes in winter.
